What If Sherlock Holmes was a Canadian Scotsman who liked to travel... who applied not only logic but also transcendentalism, and a little magic and theatricality, to reveal clues and solve cases? In this series of fourteen short stories, "The Adventures of Fletcher MacDonald,"  a contemporary “problem solver,” visits iconic and exotic places worldwide on a quest to solve vexing puzzles. Told through the eyes of Fletcher’s best friend and colleague, Max Bateman, Fletcher employs his unique blend of encyclopedic knowledge, intuition, and appreciation of laws and forces yet to be fully understood to discover answers and, not infrequently, to raise new questions.

Clients across the globe seek out the brooding genius from Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. “The Other Enigma” is set in the Galapagos, where Fletcher demonstrates tenacity and interrogative skills to unscramble the disappearance of a naturalist couple on their honeymoon. In the “Woman of Arles,” his sophistication and appreciation of art helps to discover a precious cache of lost Van Gogh paintings. His realpolitik notions of fair play infuse his contemplation of revenge in the “The Queen of Nida,” set in Lithuania. And although the hardnosed gambling capital of Las Vegas might seem like an unlikely spot for Mexican sorcery, Fletcher’s exhaustive knowledge extends even to realms beyond our ken in “Double Down.” Fiona MacAvoy, Max’s wife, adds her insight and zest to many of the adventures. The threesome click into high gear in “The Eye of the Pantheon” and “Manchester Square.”

The dynamics of discovery and friendship make these adventures something to ponder long after they are read.
